WCOC Sprint – updates

Updated Bulletin – Aug 15, 2025

The uncertainty introduced by construction at the WCOC Sprint venue has meant that several items needed to be finalised at the last minute. Please see the revisions to the Bulletin for the WCOC Sprint event below. We appreciate your patience.

Parking, facilities, & washrooms

  • When you arrive and park, please register your vehicle online using the link: https://www.offstreet.io/events/UUELXVDH. There is no fee for parking, but your license plate must be registered to avoid a ticket.
  • There are some services available in the main RDP campus building, including coffee shops and washrooms. However, these can only be accessed after the completion of the event. Re-entering the map after you finish but before all other competitors are finished is not permitted.
  • Please do not enter the AHS building to the immediate N of the arena area (S of the parking area).
  • Washrooms are available at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, immediately W of the parking area. You can access the building via the back door (S end of the building).
  • Please do not use the bushes around the arena as a washroom.

A note on mapping of individual trees

Individual trees on the map are consistently shown in three ways:

(A) Green filled dots = Smaller trees or bushes with negligible canopy (may be deciduous or conifer).
(B) Green dots or circles within white = Large (dots) or larger (circles) trees with notable canopies but runnable at the base and with high visibility (may be deciduous or conifers with the bottom branches pruned). Canopies (white areas) often connect between multiple trees (dots).
(C) Small light green areas = Either larger individual conifer trees without any pruning (i.e., crowns extend to the ground) or clumps of dense bushes/trees. Controls on these features will be noted in the control description either as a single tree, conifer (for large single conifers) or as a copse or thicket (for a dense area of many bushes or smaller trees).

Updated course statistics

Some of the course metrics for the WCOC Sprint courses have changed slightly. Most of the changes bring the courses more in line with RWTs. Classes, course numbers, and map scales have not changed. See the table below:

Course Planner’s Notes

The WCOC Sprint event takes place on the urban campus of Red Deer Polytechnic. The campus is characterised by well-manicured grass areas with paved pathways, numerous individual trees, copses, and gardens. The campus features one main building in the centre of the map with numerous courtyards, parking lots, and other paved areas. Around the main campus building are a number of smaller buildings, mostly student residences. At the south end of the map is a wooded green space with a network of natural trails.

Special note about ongoing construction at Red Deer Polytechnic

There are several areas of the map that are currently under construction. In most cases, these areas will be physically fenced off with construction fencing. These areas are also marked on the map as out-of-bounds. Courses generally avoid these areas. We have been working hard with Red Deer Polytechnic to ensure that construction material and fencing remains contained to the mapped out-of-bounds areas. However, there may be some minor construction activity or small areas of stored construction materials in other unmarked locations on the map. For your safety, please avoid passing through any active construction or material storage areas.

Accessing the Arena

The arena is in the SW corner of the map, south of the Sheldon Kennedy Centre. Parking for the event is in a gravel lot on the west side of campus and participants are required to enter the venue from a specific direction (see also the map below).

From Highway 2 (either northbound or southbound):

  1. Take exit 397 to 32 Street east.
  2. Follow 32 Street for 400m to the first intersection.
  3. Turn right (south) onto College Circle.
  4. Continue 400m past the parking lot for the Canada Games Centre.
  5. Turn right (south) at the immediate east end of the parking lot for the Canada Games Centre.
  6. Continue 200m to the immediate east end of the Canada Games Centre building, then enter the parking lot on the left (east).

From downtown Red Deer:

  1. Get yourself onto 32 Street westbound towards the highway (you’re orienteers, you can figure it out!).
  2. Turn left (south) onto College Circle.
  3. Continue 400m past the parking lot for the Canada Games Centre.
  4. Turn right (south) at the immediate east end of the parking lot for the Canada Games Centre.
  5. Continue 200m to the immediate east end of the Canada Games Centre building, then enter the parking lot on the left (east).

For those participants staying overnight in the residences on campus, you are required to follow a specified route to the arena. See the map below for walking (in red) and driving (in yellow) directions. Deviation from this route is a violation of the embargo. The walking route is roughly 1.5km long and will not be marked. You must be out of the residence area by no later than 9:00am.

Map & Courses

  • The map scale is either 1:4000 or 1:3000 (see table below) and the contour interval is 2.5m.
  • Some stairwells on campus are narrow and winding. Please keep to the right on stairwells as there may be runners using them in both directions.
  • The building areas feature many tight blind corners. While this is fun, it also increases the chances of collisions with other runners. Please take blind corners cautiously and try to keep your head up!

Safety

  • All campus areas are open to the public, including the roads and parking lots, and runners should expect to encounter pedestrians and both parked and moving vehicles (including construction traffic, such as large trucks).
  • There is one main road through the map that does a loop around campus. While this road is not busy, it is open to traffic and runners should use caution when crossing. Runners on lower courses will cross at marshalled crossings while runners on higher courses may make multiple unmarshalled road crossings.
  • While there is some possibility of wildlife wandering onto the map, this should be limited to deer and other small critters that won’t eat you. That being said, always give wildlife plenty of space.
